A good night in Marfa - pool and beer at the bar with Mia and then to her friend's place to continue drinking terrible terrible lager. Really the worst beer.
Again we were in no rush this morning as the journey was a new record short, just the 21 miles north to Fort Davis. We could continue northwest from here on the 90 to Van Horn, but I would really like to get up the mountain to McDonald Observatory tomorrow. Although it is kind of a pointless hill and apparently quite a challenging one.
I’m so glad we decided to come to Marfa, what a unique place. Population 2000 and something but it feels like it’s very much punching above its weight. It seems a couple of breaks, notably artist Donald Judd who decided to move here from New York, and this place has been saved from the fate of other towns around it and now it’s packed with an artistic community.
Zeke, who we met last night In Marfa, fancied joining us on the ride to Fort Davis so we met at midday. We extended our thanks and exchanged goodbyes to Tom & Mia at the radio station and Katherine at the gallery next door. A beautiful 21 mile ride which just would be the absolute perfect evening ride to clear the mind. Finally a quality grocery store for a lunch sandwich.
Liz, the Texan powerhouse she is, has hooked us up with contacts in town - Lonn and Dedie. We call them and they tell us to come round. We oblige and are promptly introduced and welcomed into their wonderful house. No point in moving far tonight.
This is apparently the darkest area in the US, hence the observatory on the mountain, and a good place to observe the night sky. Unfortunately the moon is nearly full and clouds are out.
