On the road again.
After getting opinion and seeing how nice Pensacola beach was I decided to take the coastal route south of Mobile Bay and skip Mobile city. I set my sights on a Warm Showers host on Dauphin Island where people are more than welcome to arrive and pitch tents underneath this guy’s house. There is a ferry that connects a long peninsula over to the island which seemed like a great spot to be able to spend a night.
Mike decided to hop on his bike and join me out to Orange Beach. It was a beautiful day around the bay. A burger lunch stop at a lively beachfront bar called Florobama before we parted ways and I passed the state line. I hope we cross paths again, Mike, thanks for making the journey more memorable.
The bike shop in Tallahassee had forwarded me details of another Brit, Ken, who passed through a couple of days after me and was also doing a similar route. We figured he would overtake me through Pensacola and arranged to meet today. He messaged me the ferry time as I had just finished my new pastime - aimlessly wandering a Winn-Dixie - and chatted to a Danish tourist passing going W-E. I tried to set a quick pace to catch it but this bike, she’s hefty; I soon realised I wouldn’t make the same crossing and relaxed down the sun-soaked road.
I passed another cyclist coming the other way, this time a young lady from one of the Carolinas whose friend had broken a collar bone so was finishing the ride alongside her on a scooter! I had a 90 minute wait for the ferry and by the time it came the light was fading.
An hour later and I arrived to see three tents pitched up underneath this house. Ken, Lauren who coincidentally works at the aforementioned Bike House in Tallahassee, and Dave and Jay from New York . Both Lauren and Dave are cycling with dog trailers. The first I’ve seen. I’m tired so after brief introductions retire early to a peaceful tent.
