Day 18: Oberlin, LA to Kirbyville, TX

It was nice to have a roof over my head for the night, even if on closer inspection the cabin didn't look like it'd been cleaned for a long long while.

It was a fairly uneventful day today with only a few different roads taken.

Starting out at a good hour, breakfast was skipped in favour of heading to the next town, DeRidder. It was a little further than we'd anticipated so a grumpy two hours later we settled in for an early lunch of fried chicken. It's quite noticeable just how dominant fast food culture is in America; in search of breakfast, any enquiries with locals are always immediately directed towards the row of burger/chicken joints on the highway heading in or out of town. Ummm there's a Burger King on the 190 West. Locally run places in most towns seem hard to come be, healthy almost impossible. It's fun being able to stuff your face with fast food because I'm going to be cycling all day, and only for the next few months, but how could you possibly sustain it?

A bridge over the Sabine River took us into Texas.

Home state for the next few weeks
I'm looking forward to having some better road surfaces in Texas. It's a bit daunting knowing I'll be in this state for most likely the next few weeks. I have my eyes set on Austin but after that, who knows what's to come.

An end of day milkshake left us crawling the final few miles south down Highway 96. Tonight we're staying with Debbie & Sidney who host a lot of cyclists passing through here along the same route. Debbie has told us if we leave hungry it's our own fault. That's what I like to hear.
