Day 17: Lafayette, LA to Oberlin, LA

It turned out to be another lively night as there was a St. Patrick's Day celebration in town, as well as a night where the art galleries open up late. Americans (Irish-Americans, sorry) go mad for this. Thousands of people in green t-shirts, it was rude not to join in.

While in the bike shop yesterday Ken got talking to James, a local photographer, who wanted to take pictures of us and the bikes this morning. We waited for him to come around to the house before heading off and he managed to get some great shots in. I'll post more over the coming days.

Thanks for letting us stay Dennis & Deborah. Petit Rouge (front right) I don't think you liked me, but it was a pleasure.

I enjoyed Lafayette. It was more straight edge and relaxed compared to NOLA, but then again, most places are. Having another comfortable house to stay in with such kindhearted hosts was another treat.

Today we moved northwest, right-angling across flat, quiet country roads to meet up with the Adventure Cycling route once again. It was a hot day of many dog chases and much turtle roadkill.

A revelatory Sonic Drive-In milkshake experience happened in Eunice.

This will become ritual

We aimed to camp the night came at White Sands Canoe Rental as indicated on Ken's map. A couple of miles off a man leans out of a pickup truck heading in the opposite direction. It was the owner/caretaker of the place and he told us to head inside the cabin and make ourselves at home, free of charge. We finished the last miles in the late evening sun and the cabin turned out to be empty because of the canoeing low season.

A cold hose shower was a refreshing end to a hot days riding. And finally opportunity to give the camp stove a good go albeit inside of a wood cabin. I took care of the pork, peppers and beans. Ken on mashed potato duty. Fuel.
