The first town we hit was Franklin and out of nowhere a grand main street of sugar plantation mansions lined with trees and ornate lampposts. The sun came out to complete the scene and we decided to stop off for lunch. I had leftover barbecue from last night's feast but couldn't resist the opportunity to sample the drive-thru fried chicken nestled amongst the downtown history.
It was a nice spot so we hung around for a little while and confirmed a Warm Showers host for tonight. On the road further along we actually bumped into a trio of cyclists who'd stayed with the same people last night. One of them was three-quarters of the way through an anti-clockwise perimeter tour of the US having started in New York 9 months ago.
Ken got a huge nail through his tyre so after a lengthy stop we arrived in Lafayette a bit later than expected just before sunset. We found Dennis and Deborah's house no problem as we entered town just past the University of Louisiana campus. Their house was beautiful and located in a peaceful residential district, both of them were so welcoming and gave us the entire top floor of the house up a set of treacherous winding stairs. We were invited to join them for dinner, local sweet potatoes and rice, which Deborah had prepared.
There are a few live music venues in town so off we head.
Day 16: Lafayette
We ended up having quite a few beers at the gig last night so decided to not rush off this morning. Besides, we both needed to visit the bike shop to look over a few things and finally purchase inner tubes.
Dennis mentioned of a pond with alligators in at the university campus along his dog walk route which offered the perfect opportunity for me to see my first of the journey so Ken and I tagged along.
Morning rush |
The lazy Saturday atmosphere got to us as we were eating lunch and we've decided to stay for another night.
