Bike maintenance and a helluva bacon roll and face-sized apple fritter breakfast took up most of this morning. We checked out City Park for a bit and went for fried shrimp po boy sandwiches with plenty of unneeded side orders for lunch. Oh man all these sweet potato fries are tasty.
Scott works as a pedicabber in the city so had a chance to show us around on a great cycle tour of the city on his day off, past the grand old Southern Mansions, the Mardi Gras remains still evident along the roadside, potholes a constant threat to swallow you whole. Quite handy as well to have a guide considering the state of road junctions, metres from joining the interstate wasn't the best way to navigate the city. The rain had other ideas though so we cut off slightly short to head into a casino. I guess I broke even as we didn't have a clue what to do on the slots.
Needless to say, NOLA is a very interesting city. I've never been anywhere like it. There seems to be a large amount of young people heading here to fill in housing voids at a cut price which brings the obvious gentrification and hip hangouts. It's almost like the clock has been reset since the hurricane and it's an old city filled with new inhabitants. It has to be said it's a massive shame though that the racial divide is so big and so stark.
Scott took us to a potluck party his group of friends do every week on rotation. They were a really friendly bunch and the food spread they had cooked was top quality - It was a welcome novelty to have so many vegetables, the majority of things edible so far seem to be engineered for space travel.
The great thing about staying with different hosts along the way is the scope of person you get to meet. Scott's house was a fantastic mix of eclectic characters that only enhanced the city's charm.
We plan to move on westward tomorrow morning, hopefully to Morgan City which looks like the next reachable biggish place.
