The lovely woman from the house next door called over as we all emerged from our tents to invite us for pancakes and coffee and let us use her shower which was preferable to the cold hose. Apparently the guy who owns the house never uses it so just lets cyclists camp out underneath and she always has them around for breakfast. I think we were about number 50 who’d passed through.
Ken and I decided we’d ride together today as we are both going into New Orleans and he's riding similar daily mileage to me. The route we will take is broadly the same until Arizona, where he's planning on deviating and riding up through Utah and further north eventually to Seattle. His overall trip is a month longer than mine. It transpired that we both were at University College London at the same time and stayed in the same halls.
This morning started off overcast and certain rain lay ahead as the two of us were accompanied briefly by Lauren and her dog on the 3 mile bridge across Mobile Bay.
Plan was to follow the coast and I’d try and get hold of the Warm Showers host in Gulfport who’d messaged me this morning and seemed to have taken pity because of the impending rain after originally saying they were unavailable.
We arrived in Biloxi after a thorough soaking. I tried calling the Warm Showers host to no avail so we popped into the visitor centre to ask about places to camp. This turned out to be the right call.
The lady on the front desk was so sweet hurrying to bring us hot chocolate and seemed distraught to learn we would be camping in the storm. A guy working at the visitor centre, Tanner, who was in the room must have shared this feeling turned around and said we could stay at his house! Another act of huge generosity. Tanner was a really very kind man and sorted us out with everything we could need, including taking us out for a big ass burger in town. Hearing the rain crash on the roof this evening is good.
It looks as if the weather is going to be bad for a few days now. Who cares with this good fortune?
