Day 22: Giddings, TX to Austin, TX
What was meant to be a short ride into Austin became slightly arduous by taking quite a detour to avoid dirt tracks and with a few wrong turns thrown in. We decided to take Highway 71 for a bit but the inclines coupled with old trucks pouring out their toxicity made this unpleasant.
A breakfast stop turned leisurely lunch of fried catfish was taken in the nice town of Bastrop and the rain started coming down. It wasn't going to abate so we just decided to make Austin at good speed.
The weather head other ideas. The rain the worst yet, wind in our faces, roads now rivers, traffic heavy, my legs failing to play along. Entry into the city was a right battle and getting deposited on an unexpected terrible interstate junction was not a fun welcoming.
Anyway, made it here in one piece and got a hostel booked for the weekend. A happy coincidence of us getting to Austin now is it's the final weekend of SXSW festival (had hoped beforehand I could make it in time).
It's the weekend. A few days off cycling. Can't wait to check out this city.
Ken, being half Japanese, has eyed up SXSW Japan Nite tonight. Hopefully much beer.
